Even I could see there was another, truer narrative, with luck as its theme. All of a sudden people were telling me I was born to be a writer. I had a career, a little fame, a small fortune and a new life narrative. The book I wrote was called “ Liar’s Poker.” It sold a million copies. Had I waited until I was 36, I would never have done it. I knew what intellectual passion felt like - because I’d felt it here, at Princeton - and I wanted to feel it again. “Stay at Salomon Brothers 10 years, make your fortune, and then write your books,” he said. “You might just want to think about that,” he said. There was a long pause on the other end of the line. I told him I was going to quit this job that now promised me millions of dollars to write a book for an advance of 40 grand. Wall Street had become so unhinged that it was paying recent Princeton graduates who knew nothing about money small fortunes to pretend to be experts about money. Now I had something to write about: Salomon Brothers. ![]() A year and a half later Salomon Brothers was handing me a check for hundreds of thousands of dollars to give advice about derivatives to professional investors. When I got there I was assigned, almost arbitrarily, to the very best job in which to observe the growing madness: they turned me into the house expert on derivatives. But Salomon Brothers happened to be where Wall Street was being reinvented-into the place we have all come to know and love. I knew next to nothing about Salomon Brothers. She more or less forced her husband to give me a job. One night I was invited to a dinner, where I sat next to the wife of a big shot at a giant Wall Street investment bank, called Salomon Brothers. I wrote at nights, without much effect, mainly because I hadn’t the first clue what I should write about. I did what everyone does who has no idea what to do with themselves: I went to graduate school. “Never try to make a living at it.”Īnd I didn’t - not really. And so after about 45 minutes I finally said, “So. I listened and waited for Professor Childs to say how well written my thesis was. It was just a few yards from here, in McCormick Hall. Or, to put it differently: to write books. When I handed it in I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: to write senior theses. God knows what Professor Childs actually thought of it, but he helped me to become engrossed. The thesis tried to explain how the Italian sculptor Donatello used Greek and Roman sculpture - which is actually totally beside the point, but I’ve always wanted to tell someone. My adviser was a truly gifted professor, an archaeologist named William Childs. It happened while working on my senior thesis. But at Princeton, studying art history, I felt the first twinge of literary ambition. I didn’t write for the Prince, or for anyone else. I graduated from Princeton without ever having published a word of anything, anywhere. I want you to understand just how mysterious careers can be before you go out and have one yourself. ![]() I’m going to explain, briefly, how that happened. ![]() Yet somehow I have wound up rich and famous. I was almost certainly less prepared for the marketplace than most of you. Even then this was regarded as an act of insanity. By kicking me out.Īt that moment I was sure of only one thing: I was of no possible economic value to the outside world. Here I’d gone and given them four of the best years of my life and this is how they thanked me for it. I’m told you’re meant to be excited, perhaps even relieved, and maybe all of you are. What I do remember, vividly, is graduation. I must have listened to some older person share his life experience. The next time you look around a church and see everyone dressed in black it’ll be awkward to cheer. Above all, Members of the Princeton Class of 2012. Michael Lewis, author of The Big Short, Boomerang, and Liar’s Poker, gives a commencement speech on the role of luck.

While brewing actual lagers requires colder temperatures and temperature control equipment, you can still make a light beer. Therefore, making this one, while easy to make, the outcome would be the hardest part and taking everything I learned, I had to make sure it came out right. I made this beer which is a style close to a lager fermented at warm temperatures because with lighter beers, it is much easier to spot off flavors. I have come a long way since that time but this time, I wanted to make a testament to what I have learned so far. It was called A Dive Into The Pale, since it was like taking a dive into making beers for the first time. I made this beer wanting to take a step back to the first beer I ever made. Needless to say, when I first tried it, it really felt like a clean lager even though it fermented at ale temperatures. I realize my Gravity was a bit much but luckily it did not get over the top. ![]() Project #22 was my first attempt at brewing very close to a light lager. Kölsch Encounters of the Briny Deep by Nubis Sanctum Ales is a 6.8% ABV German Kölsch brewed with Azzaca hops. Kid under the depths was a really good pairing. As it goes with the theme of deep ocean and the name. Kid from Chrono Cross and an original character were both used in this pairing to represent the colors of the ingredients, flavors and the label. This one is definitely worth the try if you like hoppy lagers but would enjoy a creamsickle brew. Some of the brews by Ballast Point have been on par while others are decent at best. The vanilla and orange flavors definitely play a good role in making the sensation that this is liquid creamsickle. Clear golden body, smooth, crisp, clean and refreshing mouth feel with a very easy drinkability.Ī very delicious and refreshing brew. So let’s take a look at this one and see what it is about.īiscuit bread, honey, lemon Heads candy, lemon zest, grapefruit, floral, honey dew melon, hints of Orange cream-sickle, strawberry hints, tangerine peel, lemon starbursts and stone fruit. Ballast Point has been making some really nice variants of their original beers and definitely something I personally enjoy even if they do add fruit to their beers. Not to mention the fact that it was like an orange cream sickle beer. I remember it for being very delicious and easy to drink. They are a close community of beer tasting enthusiasts and when I was invited for a second time, someone brought this beer. I first tried this as my friend Augie’s friend’s house for a BeerBumz beer session. Brewed with a touch of nostalgia, it may remind you of a childhood treat, but this one is just for adults. ![]() The piney and citrus hop aromas of our India-Style Pale Lager combine with sweet orange and creamy vanilla – while staying true to classic lagering techniques. They can see what colors of light are coming from a star, and see what it is made of. The reason astronomers can tell how far the light gets shifted is because certain chemical elements, like the calcium in bones or the oxygen people breathe has a unique fingerprint of light that no other chemical element has. This shows relative motion in the expanding universe. Doppler blueshift of distant objects (high z) can be got from the much larger cosmological redshift.Nearby stars such as Barnard's Star are moving toward us, resulting in a very small blueshift.Blazars may emit relativistic (near the speed of light) jets toward us that appear blueshifted. When observing spiral galaxies, the side spinning toward us will have a slight blueshift relative to the side spinning away from us.Components of a binary star system will be blueshifted when moving towards Earth. When observed from earth, its light shows a blueshift. The Andromeda Galaxy is moving toward our own Milky Way galaxy within the Local Group.ĭoppler blueshift is used in astronomy to determine relative motion: The wavelength of any reflected or emitted photon or other particle is shortened in the direction of travel. The term applies to any decrease in wavelength caused by relative motion, even outside the visible spectrum. It is the opposite effect to redshift.ĭoppler blueshift is caused by movement of a source towards the observer. IMPORTANT: Remember you are looking to see which direction the stripes on the star have shifted.Blue shift is one example of the Doppler effect. Make sure you line the bottom of your element up with this dotted line before you decide on which shift has occurred. To make the comparison easier, a dotted line has been drawn under each star's emission spectrum. whether the star is moving away from the Earth or towards the Earth.whether the emission spectrum has been red shifted or blue shifted. In the activity below each star has an emission spectrum for only one element. Because the star is coming closer the waves get squished closer together. Remember that blue shift occurs when a star moves towards the Earth. Because the color blue is located near the bottom, we call this blue shift. Notice that the hydrogen stripes have shifted down just a little bit towards the bottom. ![]() The picture on the right shows a shift in the other direction. Because the star is moving away the waves get stretched further apart. Remember that red shift occurs when a star moves away from the Earth. Because the color red is located near the top, we call this red shift They have just shifted up towards the top a little bit. Notice that it still has all of the color bands that are associated with hydrogen. The stripes on the first band show light that has been red shifted. The stripes on the second band show the regular emission spectrum of hydrogen. The picture below shows an example of red shift. The change in color is so small that you need a spectrometer to help you see it. Red shift does NOT mean that a star "looks red" and blue shift does NOT mean that a star "looks blue." ![]() If a star is moving towards the Earth it squishes the waves closer than they used to be. Remember that blue light has very short waves. If a star is moving away from the Earth it stretches the waves longer than they used to be. Remember that red light has the longest waves. The change in wavelength is called "shift" and there are two categories. ![]() The difference is so small that human eyes can't detect it. (What is making the wave crests get further apart?)īecause the wavelength is changing, the colors in the starlight are changing too. ![]() ![]() When you are delivering an item as a courier company, it is important that you arrive on time, and that the cargo is not damaged. Bicycles are stolen all of the time unfortunately. This is why the police will ask first thing for a bike’s serial number if you file a stolen item report. There can be hundreds of the same color, brand, and type of bike in the world, but the serial number will distinguish it from the rest. How do I identify my bike? The bike’s serial number is the best way to identify that a bicycle is yours. How many digits is a bike serial number? Every brand is different, and so a serial number can be anywhere from 6 to 10 digits long. You can buy the bike registration stickers on Amazon. You’ll want to make sure you have that number! What if my bike doesn’t have a serial number? This could come in handy if your bike is ever stolen. Secondly, take a photo of your bike’s serial number and email it to yourself. There are two things you should do immediately.įirst – write down your bike’s serial number onto a paper and store this in a safe place. Important Tips Regarding Your Bike’s Serial NumberĪs soon as you get a bike you should record the bike’s serial number. The police and bike registries are more likely to find your bike and get it back to you if there’s a serial number associated with it. This is very useful if your bike is stolen. You can prove that bicycle belongs to you by registering your bicycle with it’s serial number. You can use the bike serial number to register your bike at a bicycle registery such as or with the local police precinct. Why is the bike’s serial number important? The barcoded serial number is different than a frame number in that it’s used by the manufacturer to verify warranties. Some bike manufacturers also include a barcoded serial number on a sticker that is placed onto the bike. They are stamped onto the frame of a bike and range from 6 to 10 digits long. They’re usually referred to as a bicycle serial number, but also at times called a “frame number.” Most (but not all) bicycles have a serial number. On the front of the bike on the headset.Flip your bike upside down and the serial number is under the bottom bracket. The photo below has arrows that are pointing to each potential serial number location.
